Soke John Olshlager
www.Nokado.com
Shihan John Olshlager is the head instructor and founder of the Nokado Schools of Self Defense. He has been training in the martial art of Jiu-Jitsu for the past 29 years. He began his training in June of 1971 under the tutelage of Shihan Robert Hansen. After training for 13 years, Shihan Olshlager traveled extensively to train with the best martial arts instructors in the United States. He has had the privilege of training with master instructors Professor Wally Jay, Soke Michael DePasquale Sr., Shihan Dennis Palumbo, Professor Willy Cahill and Shihan DePasquale Jr. After experiencing many styles of Martial Arts, he found that, while all styles have some valuable philosophy and techniques, Jiu-Jitsu was the art that suited him the best.

Seeking the traditional roots of the Martial Arts, Shihan Olshlager has also traveled to Japan several times to train and see the original birthplace of Jiu-Jitsu. In Japan, Shihan trained with Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura. Tanemura Sensei granted Shihan Olshlager a sixth degree black belt in Kokusai Ju Jutsu Renmei Do, a traditional form of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

He currently holds the rank of shichi dan, or 7th degree black belt, in Jiu-Jitsu. Shihan was promoted to this rank by Professor Wally Jay, Soke Michael DePasquale Sr., Professor Willy Cahill and Shihan DePasquale Jr.

After almost 30 years of training, Shihan Olshlager has developed a self defense system that is traditional yet very street practical. In the style of Jiu Jitsu, there are no excess movements or wasted energy. The student is faced with an attack and they respond to it in the quickest and most efficient method possible. Each technique, although dangerous to use, is practiced with extreme caution and ultimate respect towards your partner in the dojo. Shihan feels that respect is the most important aspect of training in the Martial Arts. You begin and end your training with respect.

Shihan Olshlager has developed, implemented and taught self-defense seminars and workshops throughout the Long Island and tri-state area. He has developed curriculums for the young and old, men, women and children. His "Look, Listen, Feel and React, Awareness is your best defense" is a highly respected model for women’s and men’s self defense clinics.

Shihan Olshlager was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame as Jiu Jitsu Instructor of the year in 1991, and inducted into the Connececticut Martial Arts Hall of Fame as Master Instructor in 1998. He is a recognized tournament champion in self-defense. He has had articles on traditional and street effective Jiu Jitsu published in all of the leading martial arts publications. He has been interviewed for radio on the power of the mind and the martial arts. He has also been in several TV shows including the Martial Art of Jiu-Jitsu.

Shihan Olshlager professes the following philosophies...

"Training is endless" -  "When one grows we all grow" - "To touch the hand of a Master is to change a life forever"

Shihan Olshlager feels that, regardless of experience, he is a life-long student of the Martial Arts. He continues to train daily, seeking both the truth of the martial arts and the serenity they offer. He will continue to share his knowledge and energy to whomever is willing to accept it.

Sabunin Walter Vendura

I began my Tae Kwon Do training while serving our country in Vietnam from 1967 - 1968, with Tiger Rock, a group of Korean Tae Kwon Do Soldiers. Upon my return, I found GrandMaster Hyun OK Shin in Laurelton N.Y. who  continues to be my revered instructor & mentor. After receiving rank of 1st Dan Black Belt In 1973, I opened my first school under grandmaster Shin’s guidance in Farmingdale. L.I. in 1974. Continuing under the tutelage of GrandMaster Shin, I earned my 6th Dan Black Belt in 2005. I consider the traditional values of the art the most important aspect in teaching, seeking to preserve the integrity & character of the art.

I have trained in other forms of Martial Arts with many great instructors including Aikido under the guidance of Sensei Hagihara, fillipino Art of Arnis/Stick fighting under Grandmaster Remey Peresis, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the Gracie family, Ninjitsu under Professor Felix Vasquez.I also studied GoJanRu in the Ron vanCleef system & American Combat Under Kyoshi Richard Barathey. The knowledge & experience I acquired was most valuable. In addition, I attended various seminars & Martial Arts camps, in many different states over the years including Puerto Rico as a guest instructor as well as seminars/certifications with Professor Ronald Duncan, Professor Wally Jay, Mike DePasQuale & George Dillman.

I have participated in several tournaments over the years, as well as organizing & hosting my own. In 1988, I won the overall competitor in the Master level division for the Manchester Tae Kwon Do Grand Championship in Massachusetts, taking 1st place in all 3 divisions. However, one of my most rewarding was experiences as a Martial Artist/Instructor was teaching a blind student who was turned away by 4 other schools. He trained with me for over 5 years & earned the rank of Black Belt at the age of 25.

In 1997, I was inducted into the  WORLD UNION KARATE HALL OF FAME & named Tae Kwon Do INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR . I was also awarded Teaching Excellence  in the Martial Arts in 1997 by the Martial Arts Business magazine. In 2009, I was inducted into the  USA MARTIAL ARTS HALL OF FAME & named Tae Kwon Do MASTER OF THE YEAR .

Having owned & operated several schools throughout my journey, I have made it my priority to always give back to the community. I have been a member of all the local Chamber’s of Commerce & Rotary Clubs. I have hosted & organized several FUNDRAISING events for the MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION, the LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES & more recently the CODY CENTER for AUTISM @ SUNY STONY BROOK & AUTISM SPEAKS, as I have several students with special needs/autism spectrum disorders.

In my many years living  as a Martial Artist, being a student, instructor, businessman, mentor & role model, the many lessons I have learned along the way have been a source of inspiration in teaching my students. Holding on to the basic tenets & philosophy of life in the martial arts, has allowed me to retain my integrity & strength. In the end, it is the strength of one’s commitment & the firmness of one’s resolve that will determine the course & outcome of one’s journey along the noble path.
